Grigory Leps is a popular Russian singer, Honored Artist of Russia, who gained fame as a member of the musical group “Index-398”. He is the owner of prestigious music awards and awards, including “Golden Gramophone”, “Artist of the Year”, “Muz-TV Award”, etc. He regularly participates in music festivals and records joint compositions with other famous performers.

Childhood and adolescence

Grigory Viktorovich Leps (Lepsveridze) was born on July 16, 1962 in Sochi into a Georgian family. His father was a meat plant worker, and his mother worked as a nurse. The boy studied in a very ordinary school and was an absolutely incapable student, constantly receiving bad grades. However, from childhood Grisha was interested in music and playing sports.

After the young man finished his studies at school, he entered a music school with the goal of mastering playing percussion instruments. Studying at the college was much more successful than at school. After music school, he joined the army, and after finishing his military service he began singing in Caucasian restaurants and performing in various rock bands. So, in the 1980s, Leps was known as the lead singer of the then popular music group Index-398.

In his youth, Leps sang almost every night in Sochi restaurants, which greatly exhausted the future star. He relieved the feeling of fatigue with the help of alcoholic drinks.

After some time, the young man realized that he needed to move on, otherwise he risked dying not only as an artist, but also simply as a person. For this very reason, Leps went to Moscow, where, however, he was not received very cordially. Nobody was interested in the singer’s repertoire, and in order to somehow earn a living, he began to make do with some completely random jobs, got addicted to drugs and seriously neglected his appearance.

Music career

Real success in his musical career began when Leps was already over 30 years old and his first album, “God Bless You,” was released, which included the song “Natalie,” which was popular at that time. A video clip was also recorded for this composition, which the singer himself saw for the first time only in the hospital, where he was admitted due to an aggravated stomach ulcer. Quite serious health problems did not allow Gregory to perform at the “Song-95” music festival. The singer then underwent treatment for a long time and lost 35 kg. After this, Leps completely gave up alcohol abuse and managed to get rid of drug addiction.

In 1997, Grigory Leps released his second solo album. In the same year, he attended the song festival “Song of the Year-97”, where he performed the song “My Thoughts”. Participation in this festival significantly increased the singer's popularity.

In 2000, Leps’s voice suddenly disappeared and in order to restore the functioning of his ligaments, he had to resort to surgery. The singer fully recovered only in 2002, again appearing on stage and presenting his new solo album “On the Strings of Rain.” In addition, in the same year, the shooting of a video clip for the currently popular composition “A Glass of Vodka on the Table” took place.

In 2006, another album, “In the Center of the Earth,” was presented, and his first big solo concert took place at the Olimpiysky.

In 2007, Leps recorded joint songs with such popular performers as. The music for the songs was composed by the famous producer and composer Viktor Drobysh.

Two years later, Grigory Leps performed at the Kremlin Palace for three days in a row, presenting his new album “Waterfall” to fans. A month after the concerts, Leps was again hospitalized, but now with acute bronchitis.

In 2011, the 10th album “Pince-nez” was released. And it was this year that Grigory Leps was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. In December of the same year, he and Timati recorded the song “Requiem for Love,” and a year later they presented their second joint song, “London.”

Grigory Leps covered Lev Shapiro’s composition “The Best Day,” for which he received the Golden Gramophone award in 2011. In addition, he received a second statuette for the song “Real Woman” and became the first performer in the history of this prestigious music award to have two solo songs awarded at once.

In 2012, the singer opened his own production center, which helps young and talented musicians find their niche in show business. In the same year, the singer won another Golden Gramophone award and received the title of best singer of the year according to the Song of the Year song festival.

In December 2012, Leps released his 11th album, which was called “Full Ahead!”, and immediately rose to first position in the Russian segment of the iTunes Store chart. In parallel with this album, two song collections were released, which have already earned the love of the audience (“The Best” and “Duets”). These collections included not only Leps’ solo works, but also his joint compositions with other artists.

In 2013, the artist presented several of his new compositions during the New Wave festival. In particular, the solo composition “Moscow Song” and a duet with Ani Lorak on the composition “Mirrors”. In the same year, he again won the Singer of the Year award and two Golden Gramophone statuettes.

In October of the same year, the American Treasury Department announced that the singer was a member of a “Eurasian crime syndicate.” Having accused Leps of being in connection with the “post-Soviet mafia,” the United States banned the artist from entering the country, froze his assets, and also banned citizens of their country from making any transactions with Leps.

The next year brought the artist three big solo concerts, the release of his 12th album, two more Golden Gramophone awards and a large number of other prestigious awards and prizes.

In 2015, Leps organized the festive song festival “Christmas at Rosa Khutor,” which is now held annually. In addition, Gregory is a constant participant in the “Heat” song festival in Baku.

Working on television

In 2015, Grigory Leps began to appear on television regularly, not as a singer. So, he agreed to become a co-host of the show “Main Stage” on the TV channel “Russia-1”. He also became a mentor for the fourth season of the music program “The Voice.” By the way, his team won then.

In 2016, the singer again organized the Christmas festival and continued his further journey as a mentor for the fifth season of “The Voice.” Grigory Leps is the producer of the popular talented performer Alexander Panayotov, who took second place in this season of “The Voice”. In addition, he even took up the promotion, but soon abandoned this idea, stopping only at organizing her solo concerts.

At the end of 2017, Leps, together with Maxim Fadeev, presented a heart-tugging video clip for a song about male friendship (“Eagles or Crows”), which no circumstances will destroy.

Personal life

Grigory Leps got married for the first time while studying at a music school. His wife was Svetlana Dubinskaya, who also studied at this educational institution. However, the young people divorced quite soon, and Grigory married for the second time to his current wife Anna Shaplykova, who worked as a dancer.

Grigory Leps has four children. In 1984 (married to Svetlana), his first daughter Inga was born, who later became an actress. Basically, the girl takes part in the filming of video clips, arthouse, independent projects, and is also the author of scripts. The second daughter, Eva, was born in 2002, and 5 years later the couple had a third daughter, Nicole. Only in 2010 did they have a son, Ivan, who was very welcome in the family.

The singer spoke more than once about his personal life in Andrei Malakhov’s television show, and Channel One even made a documentary about him, from which it became known that Gregory had a rich home library and a collection of icons.

In 2016, Leps’ daughter from his first marriage, Inga, wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and start a musical career. The girl took part in the filming of the blind auditions of “The Voice”, but she was unable to impress the judges. After this, Gregory told the press that he recognized his daughter’s voice, but even before that he told Inga that if she decided to take part in the show, he would not turn to her. By the way, the artist even criticized her performance. Leps is skeptical about his daughter’s plans to build a musical career and believes that she should choose one key direction and not waste herself on trifles. But Leps, on the contrary, does not resist his daughter Eva’s desire to perform on stage. For her, Grigory even organized the pop group “COSMOS girls”.

Grigory Leps currently

In 2018, Leps again became involved in cinema, writing the soundtrack for the film “Godunov”. For the first time, the singer composed a full-fledged musical accompaniment in 2016 for the biopic about Princess Sophia Paleologus of Byzantium.

In November 2018, Leps’ collection of awards was replenished with another Golden Gramophone statuette.

The singer continued to delight his fans with new compositions and video clips. In particular, the audience loved the song “Life Is Good”. The song “Without You” from the album “You’re So Serious,” which was released in 2017, took on the video format. In addition, a video was shot for the song “Amen” from the same disc.

In the rather scandalous video clip of Philip Kirkorov for the song “The Color of Mood is Blue,” Grigory Leps appeared in the guise of a homeless person.

Changes had to be made to Leps's summer tour schedule in 2018, as Grigory ended up in the hospital with a broken rib. However, he was able to take part in a concert in honor of the anniversary of businessman and poet Mikhail Gutseriev.

The traditional song festival “Christmas with Grigory Leps” in December 2018 was moved from Sochi to Moscow and lasted for two days, instead of one.

Grigory Leps (real name - Grigory Viktorovich Lepsveridze). Born on July 16, 1962 in Sochi. Russian singer of Georgian origin, composer, producer, member of the International Union of Pop Artists. Honored Artist of the Russian Federation (2011). Winner of the World Music Awards, Song of the Year, and Golden Gramophone.

Father - Viktor Antonovich, worked at the Sochi meat processing plant.

Mother - Natella Semyonovna, worked at a bakery.

Sister - Eteri Alavidze.

He studied at Sochi Secondary School No. 7. By his own admission, he was not particularly successful in his studies; teachers even called him a “damned poor student.”

Since childhood, he was seriously involved in football and music, playing in the school ensemble.

At the age of 14 he entered a music school, graduating in the percussion class.

After serving in the army in Khabarovsk, he worked on the dance floor in the Sochi Riviera Park, sang in Sochi restaurants, and played in rock bands. In the late 80s he was the lead singer of the Index-398 group.

In the early 1990s, Grigory Leps performed romances at the 1.3.7 restaurant in the Zhemchuzhina hotel in Sochi. Leps spent all his fees on casinos, slot machines, booze and women. And he earned a lot at that time. As he recalls: “It used to be up to 150 rubles a day. There was a lot more."

At the age of 30 he moved to Moscow. “...I didn’t go for fame as such. I just already understood that if I stayed singing in Sochi restaurants, I would fizzle out as an artist. He worked all night long. And fatigue was relieved by alcohol".

In addition, many famous musicians, such as Alexander Kalyanov, Oleg Gazmanov, Mikhail Shufutinsky, having dinner at the restaurant where Leps sang, advised him to go to the capital. According to his recollections, the capital met him unfriendly: “I was of little interest to anyone. Drank a lot. Started using drugs. Looked correspondingly bad. My weight was over 100 kg. And the people who once promised to help naturally disappeared. It was difficult with me like that".

Although, according to him, he was not in poverty, “enough for restaurants”. In Moscow, he shortened his last name: “For sonority.” Lepsveridze is not easy for everyone to pronounce. Everyone called me that when I was a child - I’m already used to it. This is better than Grisha Sochinsky. They suggested that I be called that when I first arrived in Moscow. It was assumed that the repertoire would be appropriate: “the Finnish girl sparkled - goodbye Marinka.” And so it turned out to be a sonorous pseudonym, and part of the surname remained.”

In 1994, recording began on the first album, “God Bless You,” which was released in 1995 - and the song from this album, “Natalie,” quickly gained popularity. Listeners regularly ordered it from radio stations. The singer immediately began filming two videos (“Natalie”, “God Bless You”), but due to the intense rhythm of rehearsals and concerts, he lost his health.

“Then, after many years of stupid drunkenness, the body simply could not stand it - pancreatic necrosis, I was so twisted at the moment that I thought - that’s it, it’s over. They took me to the hospital via ambulance - and immediately onto the operating table. The doctors had serious doubts whether I would survive. I remember lying and staring blankly at the hospital ceiling. There is not a single thought in my head. It was scary only when the dead neighbors were taken out of the room.”, recalls Leps.

When the artist was discharged from the hospital, doctors warned that one sip of alcohol could be his last. Since then, Leps almost never drinks alcohol. “There were many different periods in my life. And only the fear of dying young stopped me from repeating certain mistakes.”, he says.

For the same reason, he was also unable to perform at the “Songs of the Year 95” concert. During this time, Leps lost 35 kg.

In 1997, the second album “Whole Life” was released, recorded a year earlier at the Nota studio (it included the songs “Whole Life”, “Jock”, “Chizhik”, “Ice”). Leps first took part in the festival “Songs of the Year-97” with the song “My Thoughts”.

The second wife is Anna Shaplykova (born May 13, 1972) - a ballerina from the Laima Vaikule ballet. Graduated from school No. 9 in Nikopol, Dnepropetrovsk region. Leps first saw her in 2000 in a nightclub.

The artist admitted that he had problems with alcohol: “Only alcohol dope saved me from despair, lack of demand and uselessness. But the body did not know that this was salvation and resisted. Problems with the stomach and pancreas began. After the first severe attack of an ulcer, I barely recovered - I lost weight by 30 kilograms, spent more than a month in intensive care, then another six months in the general therapy ward. And I got scared. I was scared to death. Because there were people in the ward with me, who the next day were carried out feet first. And that could have happened to me the same thing. My mother, a nurse by profession, saved me. She dropped everything in Sochi and came to look after me - monitor my diet, give me medicine, give me moral support. My mother settled in the hospital, got acquainted with all the doctors and nurses, spent days and nights at my bedside. For a year and a half I didn’t open my mouth - I couldn’t sing. I had no strength, no desire, no opportunity - my ligaments failed, my body was weak. That’s when the decision was made to take care of myself. Moreover, there is one for whom. True, an ulcer once acquired is never completely cured. There was another case when I rushed straight from the concert to Botkinskaya - internal bleeding began and I lost consciousness on stage. Then the doctors said that the minutes were counting."

The list of dangerous international criminals who are prohibited from entering the United States includes Russian singer Grigory Lepsa (real name Lepsveridze). According to the Americans, the Russian showbiz star, along with several other immigrants from Russia and the CIS countries, was part of the Brotherly Circle crime syndicate and was engaged in delivering money for one of the leaders of this group, thief in law Vladislav Leonitiev. Leps himself called the accusations “absurd.” However, in reality everything is not so simple.

The question of Leps’s connections with the criminal world was already raised in 2011 in his interview with Forbes magazine. Among the close friends who gave the singer money for promotion were businessmen with a very controversial reputation - the heads of the Nordex company Grigory Luchansky and Umar Bokov. As Express Newspaper notes, back in 1994, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Mikhail Egorov reported at a hearing in the US Senate that Bokov was suspected of murdering police officers and having connections with the drug mafia. And even former CIA chief John Deitch publicly spoke out about Luchansky’s possible involvement in the illegal arms and drug trade in the 90s.

From the dossier of Grigory Luchansky

Grigory Luchansky. Born in 1945. Commander of the Latvian student detachment. Head of the department of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Latvia. Chairman of the Audit Commission of the Latvian Komsomol. The vice-rector of Leningrad State University is the youngest vice-rector in the USSR. Doctor of Economics. Arrested in 1982. In 1983, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for the theft of a furniture section, four sets, a telephone and other socialist property. Place of imprisonment - Jekabpils prison, free settlement - Solikamsk.

As the Diena newspaper wrote, Grigory Luchansky took part in the “Venspils wars”: he tried to reconcile Aivars Lembergs with the four rebels led by Oleg Stepanov. According to the publication, he is the only one whom Lembergs still listens to, because he knows about the origins of the business of the Ventspils mayor.

“The most clever undetected criminal in the world,” Time magazine gave Luchansky this description.

What do you mean by this word? Do you mean connections with crime? - Leps laughed in response. - God forbid. Everyone went to the showdown. There was such a time. This does not mean that a person represents one structure or another. I also went to the showdown. It was so.

Judging by the interview, Leps clearly did not want the media to advertise his dubious connections and sources of income. Is this why, at a recent discussion in the State Duma, he threatened to break the legs of journalists with a stick and demanded that they be prohibited from collecting and disseminating any information about the private lives of artists?

But let's go back to today. “It was no accident that Grisha Leps was included in this list,” one of the concert organizers told an Express Gazeta correspondent, who asked not to mention his name in the press, otherwise he would “be hit on the head.” - He was indeed closely associated with the crime boss from Nizhny Novgorod Vladislav Leontyev, or, as everyone called him, Vadik Bely. In the distant years 1991 - 1993, Leps periodically traveled to Nizhny to see Bely and other authoritative guys. Either for a birthday or for some other events. Once they didn’t let him leave the stage for so long that Grisha’s voice died and they had to put on a “plus” soundtrack. We saw Leps in company with Bely and in the Moscow discotheque “At the Fox”, which was popular in those years. Later, due to problems with law enforcement agencies, Vadik fled to the Emirates. I cannot say whether Leps communicated with him after that. But, most likely, he communicated.

To clarify the situation, as they say, first-hand, the Express Gazeta correspondent turned to lawyer Vadim Lyalin. In recent years, he represented the interests of Vladislav Leontyev and, in company with Leps, ended up on the ill-fated list of “enemies of America.”

Yes, Leps has known Leontiev for more than 20 years,” confirmed Lyalin. - Their meeting took place in Sochi, when Gregory was just starting his musical career. It was impossible not to pay attention to this talented musician. Since then they became friends and began to communicate. However, the American accusations that Leps, on behalf of Leontyev, transported some finances do not stand up to criticism. Imagine that we have known each other for 20 years. You come to me and say: “Lend me 10 thousand dollars! I’ll give it back tomorrow.” Agree, there is nothing criminal in this. Surely similar situations happened to Leps not only with Leontyev.

Leps Grigory Viktorovich(real name Lepsveridze) is a Soviet and Russian singer, composer, producer, member of the International Union of Pop Artists. Honored Artist of the Republic of Ingushetia, the Russian Federation, People's Artist of Karachay-Cherkessia. Winner of the World Music Awards, Song of the Year, Golden Gramophone, laureate of the Chanson of the Year award and many others.

The childhood and youth of Grigory Leps

Grigory Leps (Lepsveridze) was born on July 16, 1962 in Sochi. His father, Viktor Antonovich Lepsveridze, worked at a meat processing plant, and his mother, Natella Semyonovna, worked at a bakery. Gregory has a sister, Eteri Alavidze.

Grigory Leps studied at Sochi school No. 7. But he did not succeed, as he himself admitted, very successfully. Twitchy and nervous teachers called Gregory a “damned loser,” says Leps’ biography on the Find Out Everything website.

Grisha Leps has always been fascinated by music. The official biography on the website of Grigory Leps says: “I knew how to study, but did not want to, in high school the only reason to go to school was the school ensemble, where Grigory began to sing and play the drums.”

In addition, Grigory has been playing football quite seriously since childhood.

In 1976, Grigory Leps entered the music school to study percussion instruments. After graduating from college, Leps joined the army. The service took place miles away from my hometown - in distant Khabarovsk. And only after demobilization, Grigory Leps was able to devote himself to his favorite activity - music. At first, Grigory sang in Sochi restaurants, what is called “non-stop”, all night long. I was tired, of course, and as Grigory himself said, he relaxed with alcohol; nothing else helped relieve the excessive stress. Leps spent all his fees on casinos, slot machines, women and excessive libations. And there was quite a lot of money in those days. “It used to be up to 150 rubles a day. It happened much more,” recalled Grigory Viktorovich.

In the 80s, Grigory Leps was the lead singer of the Index-398 group in Sochi. In the early 90s, as can be understood from Leps’ biography on his website, he reached a certain level and worked as a soloist in the restaurant of the famous Sochi Riviera hotel. “Became a local celebrity! People went specially to Leps’ concerts; by Soviet standards, the fees were “off the charts.” Many celebrities, having heard Gregory’s singing, advised him to go to Moscow,” says the musician’s biographical article.

Finally, Grigory Leps realized that if he did not raise himself to a higher level musically, then he would never be able to express himself as a real artist and, in the end, would completely become drunk.

Gregory decided to go to the capital. Leps said: “I didn’t go for fame as such. I just already understood that if I stayed singing in Sochi restaurants, I would fizzle out as an artist.”

Moscow career of Grigory Leps

The decision to leave was fueled by many famous musicians, such as Alexander Kalyanov, Oleg Gazmanov, Mikhail Shufutinsky, Alexander Rosenbaum. They often dined at the restaurant where Leps sang and were hospitably invited to the capital.

However, Moscow greeted the new arrival without joy. Grigory Leps continued to drink a lot and, according to his own recollections, during the conquest of Moscow, he began to use drugs. “Looked appropriately bad. My weight was over 100 kg. And the people who once promised to help naturally disappeared. It was difficult with me like this,” Leps recalled.

An unhealthy lifestyle was not slow to make itself known in Moscow. In 1995, Leps began filming two videos - “Natalie” and “God Bless You” (the album “God Bless You” that year became the first in Grigory Leps’ solo discography). The intense schedule of rehearsals and concerts completely undermined his health. Grigory was hospitalized with a serious diagnosis. The artist, recalling those events in his memory, said: “Then, after many years of stupid drunkenness, the body simply could not stand it - pancreatic necrosis. I was so twisted at the moment that I thought it was all over. They took me to the hospital by ambulance and immediately onto the operating table. The doctors had serious doubts whether I would survive. I remember lying and staring blankly at the hospital ceiling. There is not a single thought in my head. It was only scary when the dead neighbors were taken out of the room.”

Leps’s biography notes that “Gregory was attended by his mother, who moved to his hospital during her son’s illness.” During his illness, Leps lost 35 kilograms.

When Grigory Leps was discharged from the hospital, doctors warned that one sip of alcohol could be his last. Since then, Leps almost never drinks alcohol. “There were many different periods in my life. And only the fear of dying young stopped me from repeating certain mistakes,” Leps frankly admitted.

Due to illness, Grigory was also unable to perform at the “Song of the Year-95” concert.

The flourishing career of Grigory Leps

But the singer's popularity grew. In 1997, the second album “Whole Life” was released, and in 1998 Grigory Leps received an invitation from Alla Pugacheva to sing the song “I’ll See You Anyway” at the Olimpiysky at the “Christmas Meetings”. From that moment on, mostly good news came to his hometown about Gregory.

Grigory Leps creatively collaborated with many singers. The rise to the big stage continued steadily.

Alexander Kalyanov organized a concert of Vysotsky’s songs performed by contemporary authors. Leps took part in this celebration with the song “Sail”. Collaboration with Alexander Solokha led to the appearance of such videos as “My Thoughts”, “First Birthday” and “Rat-Jealousy”, which made it possible to look at the chanson genre from a different perspective.
