Saints Equal to the Apostles Constantine and Helen. Helen Equal to the Apostles: biography, church veneration

The history of Christianity knows many people who dedicated their lives to the Lord and performed many holy deeds. One of them is Helen Equal to the Apostles, Queen of Constantinople, the mother of Emperor Constantine, a man who would play a decisive role in the fate of the young Christian religion.

Elena became famous for other exploits. Her extensive activities and great accomplishments made the queen revered on a par with the apostles.

Life

The birthplace of the future empress was the port city of Drepan, located in the Roman province of Bithynia. Fate did not gift the girl with a noble origin - her father was the owner of an inn. Elena grew up in Drepan, working in her father's hotel.

Her fate changed thanks to chance. One day a famous Roman military leader passed by the hotel. He noticed a pretty girl working there. Her beauty and nobility of soul made an indelible impression on the military leader. He decided to take Elena as his wife. The military leader turned out to be Constantius Chlorus, the future Emperor of Rome. Elena agreed to marry him.

From that time on, she found herself drawn into the turbulent political life of the Roman Empire. Despite the turbulent times, Elena lived a happily married life and gave birth to a son, who was named Konstantin. Some time after the birth of her son, circumstances forced Elena to leave the royal palace.

Emperor Diocletian divided the empire into four parts, inviting Constantius to rule one of them. To strengthen family ties with the Roman nobility, Constantius married a representative of the royal family - Theodora, the stepdaughter of Emperor Maximin, who retired from governing the empire. Elena found herself removed from the court for fifteen years.

Constantius Chlorus died in 306. Constantine, the son of Helen, was proclaimed the new emperor. Constantine brought his mother back from exile. Once again at court, Elena acquired great favor among the Roman people.

Konstantin deeply respected Elena as a mother and as a virtuous woman. Helen was awarded such honors that she was called Augusta and Basilisa - titles of Roman emperors. The image of Helen was minted on gold coins. Konstantin trusted his mother to manage the treasury at her own request.

Queen Helen's Finding of the Cross

In her declining years, Elena set out to make a pilgrimage to Palestine, to the place of Christ’s life. Even in old age, possessing a sharp mind and the speed of a young body, Elena headed east. In Palestine she had to accomplish a great deed - to find the Cross on which Christ was crucified.

The legend about Helen's acquisition of the Holy Cross has reached us in two versions. The first of them says that the Cross was found under the temple of Aphrodite. When it was destroyed, under its rubble they found three different crosses, a sign taken down of the Cross of the Savior and nails. How to determine which of the three crosses is genuine was invented by Macarius, Bishop of Jerusalem. He decided to apply each cross to a sick woman. God revealed the true Cross when a woman regained health by touching it. Those who were present at this event gave praise to the Lord, and Bishop Macarius raised the Cross, showing it to everyone.

According to the second version, Elena turned to the Jerusalem Jews for help. The old Jew, whose name was Judas, pointed to the sanctuary of Venus. Elena ordered the destruction of the temple. During excavations, three crosses were discovered. The Holy Cross was found through a miracle: a dead man was carried nearby, and when the Holy Cross was brought to his flesh, the dead man came to life. Judas converted to Christianity and became a bishop.

During the journey, Elena never ceased to show the best qualities of her nature. Driving past the cities, the empress showered gifts on the local population. Elena did not refuse anyone who turned to her for help. Elena also did not forget about the churches, which she decorated with rich jewelry.

She visited temples even in the smallest cities. Elena appeared in modest clothes, mingling with the crowd. In addition, she is credited with the construction of a large number of churches on the holy land. Elena also built many hospitals.

Returning from a pilgrimage, Elena made a stop in Cyprus. Seeing how the local population suffered from snakes, she ordered cats to be brought to Cyprus.

Elena founded the Stavrovoun monastery here.

Saint Helena Equal to the Apostles, what helps

After her death, Elena became a revered Christian saint, patroness and helper in earthly affairs. Anyone who wants to achieve material prosperity can turn to Saint Helena Equal to the Apostles for assistance.

Saint Helena also helps those who decide to start an important business, achieve career growth or success in the political field. In addition, the cult of Saint Helena is of great importance to the peasants.

It is no coincidence that Helen's Day falls on June 3 - the time when the planting of grain ends. Prayers are offered to Saint Helena for the protection of crops and increased yields.

The meaning of the icon of St. Helena

Icons depicting Helen appeared in the Byzantine Empire. Icon painters tried to convey both her high status during her lifetime and the special disposition of the Lord towards Helen.

Sometimes she was depicted next to Emperor Constantine, her son and assistant in good deeds. This emphasized the extraordinary harmony that reigned in the saint’s family. On the icons, Constantine is on the left side, Elena is on the right. They are wearing crowns. Next to them is a cross. Sometimes the queen holds nails.

If Helen is depicted alone, then Jerusalem is behind her. She stands next to the Cross of the Savior, looking into the sky. Helena is dressed as a Byzantine empress.

On modern icons the queen is depicted alone with a cross in her right hand. It symbolizes the suffering and great accomplishments of Helen. The left hand points to the cross, or is open. By this, icon painters show that for each person the Lord has prepared a certain task that he must complete.

Prayer to Saint Helen Equal to the Apostles

They pray to Saint Helena Equal to the Apostles when they need to make the right decision. They also ask Elena for help in gaining and strengthening faith, well-being in the family and at work, and in curing illnesses. The prayer can be said at home, near an icon or in a temple.

It is preferable to pray in a church in which there is an icon of St. Helena, or a particle of her relics. In the Christian tradition there is no clear formula for turning to Saint Helena. However, the text of the prayer can be found in special collections.

Christians celebrate their name days on this day, named in honor of saints Constantine, Helen, Yaroslav, Michael, Theodore, and Andrew.

May God's peace and blessing be with you, dear birthday people. Joy and peace to you in the Holy Spirit.

Today the Holy Church commemorates Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine and Helen.

The Holy Emperor Constantine, who received the title Equal-to-the-Apostles from the Church, and in world history - the Great, was the son of Caesar Constantius Chlorus, who ruled the countries of Gaul and Britain. The huge Roman Empire at that time was divided into Western and Eastern, headed by two independent emperors who had co-rulers, one of whom in the Western half was the father of Emperor Constantine. Holy Queen Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine, was a Christian. The future ruler of the entire Roman Empire - Constantine - was brought up with respect for the Christian religion. His father did not persecute Christians in the countries he ruled, while throughout the rest of the Roman Empire Christians were subjected to severe persecution by the emperors Diocletian, his co-ruler Maximian Galerius in the East and the emperor Maximian Herculus in the West.

After the death of Constantius Chlorus, his son Constantine in 306 was proclaimed emperor of Gaul and Britain by the troops. The first task of the new emperor was to proclaim freedom of professing the Christian faith in the countries under his control. The pagan fanatic Maximian Galerius in the East and the cruel tyrant Maxentius in the West hated Emperor Constantine and plotted to depose and kill him, but Constantine warned them and, with the help of God, defeated all his opponents in a series of wars. He prayed to God to give him a sign that would inspire his army to fight bravely, and the Lord showed him in the sky the shining sign of the Cross with the inscription “By this way conquer.”

Having become the sovereign ruler of the Western part of the Roman Empire, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan on religious tolerance in 313, and in 323, when he reigned as the sole emperor over the entire Roman Empire, he extended the Edict of Milan to the entire eastern part of the empire. After three hundred years of persecution, Christians for the first time had the opportunity to openly confess their faith in Christ.

Having abandoned paganism, the emperor did not leave ancient Rome, which was the center of the pagan state, as the capital of the empire, but moved his capital to the east, to the city of Byzantium, which was renamed Constantinople. Constantine was deeply convinced that only the Christian faith could unite the vast, heterogeneous Roman Empire. He supported the Church in every possible way, brought back Christian confessors from exile, built churches, and took care of the clergy. Deeply revering the Cross of the Lord, the emperor wanted to find the very Life-giving Cross on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. For this purpose, he sent his mother, the holy queen Helen, to Jerusalem, giving her great powers and material resources. Together with Patriarch Macarius of Jerusalem, Saint Helena began a search, and by the Providence of God the Life-Giving Cross was miraculously found in 326. While in Palestine, the holy queen did a lot for the benefit of the Church. She ordered to free all places associated with the earthly life of the Lord and His Most Pure Mother from all traces of paganism, and ordered the erection of Christian churches in these memorable places. Above the Cave of the Holy Sepulcher, Emperor Constantine himself ordered the construction of a magnificent temple in honor of the Resurrection of Christ. Saint Helena gave the Life-Giving Cross for safekeeping to the Patriarch, and took part of the Cross with her to present to the Emperor. Having distributed generous alms in Jerusalem and arranged meals for the poor, during which she herself served, Holy Queen Helena returned to Constantinople, where she soon died in 327. For her great services to the Church and her labors in obtaining the Life-Giving Cross, Queen Helena is called Equal-to-the-Apostles.

The peaceful existence of the Christian Church was disrupted by the unrest and discord that arose within it due to the emergence of heresies. Even at the beginning of the activity of Emperor Constantine, the heresy of the Donatists and Novatians arose in the West, demanding the repetition of baptism over Christians who had fallen away during persecution. This heresy, rejected by two Local Councils, was finally condemned by the Council of Milan in 316. But especially destructive for the Church was the heresy of Arius, which arose in the East, which dared to reject the Divine essence of the Son of God and teach about the creatureliness of Jesus Christ. By order of the emperor, the First Ecumenical Council was convened in the city of Nicaea in 325. 318 bishops gathered for this Council, its participants were bishops-confessors during the period of persecution and many other luminaries of the Church, among whom was St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra. The Emperor attended the meetings of the Council. The heresy of Arius was condemned, and the term “Consubstantial with the Father” was included in the compiled Creed, forever cementing in the minds of Orthodox Christians the truth about the Divinity of Jesus Christ, who assumed human nature for the redemption of the entire human race.

One can be amazed at the deep church consciousness and feeling of Saint Constantine, who singled out the definition of “Consubstantial”, which he heard in the debates of the Council, and proposed to include it in the Creed.

After the Council of Nicea, Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine continued his active work in favor of the Church. At the end of his life, he accepted Holy Baptism, having prepared for it with his whole life. Saint Constantine died on the day of Pentecost in 337 and was buried in the Church of the Holy Apostles, in a tomb he had prepared in advance.

Father Savva writes: “First of all, pray intensely to God, with strict fasting, for the gift of a spiritual father. Then, when the prayer is fulfilled, you must have complete trust in your spiritual father.” He gave this testament to his spiritual children:

“Bring a full confession from the age of six. Ask to establish rules for prayer in church and at home, for sleep, for work. Before coming to your spiritual father with any question, pray earnestly that the Lord would reveal His will to him; go to your spiritual father with full faith that the Lord will reveal His will to us through him. Unconditionally and accurately carry out everything said by your spiritual father, have complete obedience to him. Do not hide anything from your spiritual father, no embarrassment, sin, etc.

If any confusion, mistrust, or suspicion appears in relation to your spiritual father, immediately tell your spiritual father about it with complete frankness, otherwise the enemy may destroy you. Constantly pray for your spiritual father and always seek his blessings and prayers. In difficult circumstances, cry out to the Lord: “Lord, through the prayers of my spiritual father (name), save me or help me in this and that.”

If there is a desire to change any of the rules given by the spiritual father, either in relation to lengthening prayers, fasting, etc., or, conversely, reducing them, then do this with the blessing of the spiritual father.”

Useful thoughts of the holy fathers:

“To be successful in the fight against passions, you need to take care to have an experienced mentor, not a caresser, but a fair one. And in earthly sciences mentors and long training are required, so is it possible to do without them in the most difficult and great task of heaven? Reverence your confessor as if you were a servant of God or an angel, but do not become attached to him as a human being, kiss his hand like an icon or the wounds of Christ, do not talk too much to him, especially do not joke, do not try to arouse his affection: after all, he is not given for friendship, but for the salvation of the soul. Be afraid to entertain or seduce him. It’s bad if you become attached to him, and he obscures the image of Christ in your heart. To do this, keep in mind his instructions, but not the features of his face, otherwise you will not receive healing of the soul, but harm.”

The most important spiritual condition is that a person should not obscure the image of Christ, so that, as Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh says, the priest should be, as it were, “transparent”: the face of Christ should be visible through him.

“Just as a ship that has a skilled helmsman enters safely into its refuge with God’s help, so a soul that has a good shepherd ascends comfortably to heaven, even though it has done a lot of evil before.”

“Those who experience any anxiety, or any bewilderment, or a split in their conscience should turn to their spiritual father, experienced in the matter of spiritual life (if they do not have their own confessor), accompanying this with a hopeful prayer, that the Lord will reveal the truth through them and will provide a soothing resolution of perplexity and confusion, and then completely calm down at their word.”

“Everything must be done with the blessing of the spiritual father. You are wise in that without blessing you do not enter into any communication with others. If you do this, you will easily preserve and save yourself.”

The Church pays a lot of attention to the relationship between the confessor and his child. There are also enough warnings that you need to carefully test so as not to end up with an ordinary rower instead of the helmsman (the one who controls the ship). A lot is said about the right relationship: that there is no need to become attached, to look for sincerity, friendship. The emerging soulfulness overlaps spiritual relationships, and partiality and partiality arise. The confessor must be a doctor, but treating the spiritual child humanly (when the relationship has developed in this way), he loses sobriety, clarity, sensitivity and prudence and can make some decisions based on people-pleasing, because everyone is weak. And this is not useful, since it does not bring spiritual fruit and results.

Let's be careful, my dears! Let us ask God to grant spiritual guidance, to value these relationships, if they have developed, and to understand that this is a certain degree of church maturity - when a person has a permanent priest for advice. Lord help us all!

Every year on June 3, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Tsar Constantine and his mother, Equal-to-the-Apostles Helen.

During the time of persecution of Christians in Britain and Gaul, Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine, the son of Emperor Constantius Chlorus, revived faith in Christ in his lands. The boy was instilled with love and respect for this religion from childhood, since his mother was a Christian. In addition, the emperor father himself did not persecute adherents of Christianity, unlike his co-rulers - Deocletian and Maximian, who showed particular cruelty in persecuting people of this faith.

After the death of Constantius, Constantine came to power. He immediately proclaimed the freedom of Christianity in his lands, and soon throughout the Roman Empire, saving all who believe in Christ from persecution. The new emperor made a lot of efforts to get rid of opponents of this religion. Queen Helena, with the advent of her son to the throne, performed many good deeds to support and develop Christianity. At her command, many churches were built in places where paganism flourished, and the same Life-Giving Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified was brought, for which she was called Equal to the Apostles.

During his reign, with the support of his mother, Emperor Constantine managed for the first time in 300 years to give people the opportunity to freely remain faithful to Christianity.

Church history knows of only a few women who were able to receive the title “equal to the apostles” - these are St. Nina, St. Mary Magdalene, martyrs Apphia and Thekla, Russian princess Olga, as well as Elena, who managed to do a lot for the glory of God. On the icon, Saint Helena is often depicted near the Cross of the Lord, next to her son, Emperor Constantine.

The life of this woman is full of difficult decisions; information about Elena has been preserved thanks to numerous historians. Shrines of that time associated with her name have also survived to our time.

History of Saint Helena

Modest Elena was hardworking, although she did not grow up in poverty. Her hometown of Drepan is now part of Turkey. She served the travelers. The girl married Flavius Constantius, the future Emperor of Rome. But at that time hardly anyone could have imagined this. The couple's son Constantine was born in 272.

As a result of political intrigues, Elena had to leave her beloved husband. Thanks to this act, he entered into an advantageous marriage, which allowed him to begin a serious political career. While still quite young, Elena moved to Germany, where her son had his residence.

Having ascended the throne, the son made his mother Augusta - essentially an equal empress, who even issued her own coin. Historians confirm that Constantine greatly respected Helen and trusted her. She became a Christian in old age (the woman was 60). Despite this, on icons the Holy Queen Helen is often depicted as a blooming young woman. This was done to symbolically convey the power of transformation of the human soul, which knows no age.

The meaning of the holy image

Thanks to the royal position, lifetime portraits of the saint, which were made on coins, were preserved. The museum houses a statue depicting Helen in a somewhat idealized form. But this was customary, since emperors were considered the descendants of gods, and people had to honor them - who would want to deify an ugly, middle-aged queen? Soon, however, the situation changed - the emperor himself became a Christian and made his religion official.

Icons of Saint Helen Equal to the Apostles appeared several centuries after her death. Byzantine craftsmen quite accurately conveyed the royal attire: a wide embroidered collar, a hem decorated with stones, armbands, and a crown. All this indicates not only the royal position during life, but also the high honor that the Lord honors the righteous in the eternal Kingdom.

Rarely did ancient masters depict the queen alone - next to her is usually her son - support, assistant, comrade-in-arms in all good deeds. Without unanimity in the family, not a single holy deed is possible - isn’t this the meaning of such a composition? And a great thing was done - Elena found the Honest Life-Giving Cross, having no idea where and how she would look. But the Lord arranges everything if a person has determination. The icon of St. Helena should also remind us of this.

Traditional icon composition:

  • St. Constantine stands on the left, St. Elena is on the right;
  • between them there is a high cross of 5 or 8 points;
  • both have crowns on their heads;
  • gestures can be different - sometimes the queen holds nails in her hands.

Modern iconography is very diverse; most often the saint is depicted alone, holding a cross in her right hand - a symbol of suffering, and also reminiscent of the queen’s feat. The left hand can be open or directed towards the cross, reminding that everyone in their life must do a certain task for the Lord - this is the theological meaning of the icon of St. Elena. In the 10th century The image of royal saints became the subject for paintings of temples, triptychs, and iconostases.

In Russia, veneration of the saint began immediately after the adoption of Christianity. Princess Olga took her name in baptism. Cathedrals in Novgorod and Kyiv contain images in the Byzantine tradition (a saint with her son at the cross). Great veneration for the icon of St. Helena was held by the Russian tsars - this emphasized the continuity of power of the Christian autocrats. The saints received special honors under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich.

Rarely, there were also hagiographic icons that included stamps:

  • dream of Emperor Constantine (vision of the cross);
  • victory in battle;
  • baptism of St. Constantine;
  • trip of St. Helena to Jerusalem;
  • finding the Cross and resurrecting the deceased;
  • finding the nails of Christ.

How does the icon of St. help? Elena

Being already old (even by modern standards), the queen had an unusual dream. In it she was given instructions to cleanse the Holy Land of pagan temples.

Having received support from the emperor, the woman set off. The result of the grand journey was the discovery of the Cross of the Lord, as well as the nails with which His hands were pierced. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher was founded by St. Elena. What prevented her from enjoying her quiet life in luxury and honor? Why attach significance to any dream? The queen did this at the behest of her conscience, the voice of which is muffled in many modern people.

The meaning of the icon of St. Helena is to remind us that faith is more important than passing glory, comfort, and sometimes even common sense. The distance from Rome to the Eternal City is more than 2 thousand km. Was it easy for an elderly woman to overcome it, even with the help of servants? How did she expect to find holy places associated with the Passion of the Lord, if 3 centuries had already passed since that time? Only prayer and faith could support him in such a difficult matter.

Everything is possible with God - the saint founded many churches throughout the Holy Land, distributed alms, fed the hungry, and gave gifts to the poor. On the way back in Cyprus, she founded monasteries that are still in operation today. St. died Helen in old age around 328. Interestingly, the saint’s relics were stolen from Rome and today rest in France (Parisian church of Saint-Les-Saint-Gilles). There you can receive healing from bodily ailments.

Today's Christians believe that the icon of St. Helena helps:

  • in any difficult endeavor;
  • gaining strong faith;
  • obtaining recovery from illnesses;
  • assistance in political campaign;
  • those in high positions.

Equal-to-the-Apostles Helen will help with her prayers those who are building new churches or fighting heresies. The Orthodox prayer contains an appeal to both the queen and her son, who was also glorified as a saint.
